Why is women’s health important?

Undergoing routine tests and screenings is important to ensure you’re in optimal health and to make sure you receive the education you need to prevent STDs. You need women’s health services to:

• Lower your risk of human papillomavirus (HPV)
• Prevent gynecological infections
• Prevent the spread of STDs
• Preserve your fertility 

Because STDs and other infections can have serious impacts on your reproductive health, frequent screenings allow your OB/GYN to intervene early if you have abnormal test results. 

For instance, HPV is known for causing cervical cells to become cancerous if left untreated. With early detection, you can get started on treatment quickly and often prevent cervical cancer. 

Which types of women’s health screenings do I need?

Contemporary Women's Care is proud to offer a variety of comprehensive women’s health screenings and tests to ensure you’re in good health. Your OB/GYN may recommend one or more of the following diagnostic tests:

• Physical evaluation of your vulva and anus
• Culture of abnormal vaginal discharge
• Pap smear and pelvic exam
• Blood draw or urinalysis
• HPV test

If you have any open blisters or sores in your pelvic region, your OB/GYN may need to take a sample of fluid to have evaluated at the lab. These types of screenings are important to have regularly during your well-woman exams since most STDs, including HPV, don’t have any obvious symptoms.   

When will I get my women’s health exam results back?

Once your OB/GYN at Contemporary Women's Care gathers any needed cultures and sends them off to the lab, it can take up to a week or two for you to get your results back. The team schedules you for a follow-up visit if you have abnormal STD test results so your OB/GYN can talk with you about treatment options.

Depending on your health, your doctor may recommend getting an HPV vaccine or starting a course of antibiotics or antiviral medications.
